Asking your data questions in natural language: what AI agents can do in a company
From seeing what happened to being able to ask
For years, a good dashboard has been the final destination of a data project: it lets you see what happened. The next step is being able to ask and get an answer. For example: "why have sales dropped this month?" and receive the main causes, such as a drop in one region, with one particular customer or in one product.
Data agents are AI systems connected to the company's data that can answer questions in natural language, detect deviations or important events and, when configured to do so, start automatic actions or flows.
Three levels of maturity
- See: dashboards and reports that show what happened.
- Ask: natural-language conversations with the data to understand what is happening.
- Act: alerts, automations and actions that are triggered when something relevant happens.
The risk: AI amplifies the data you give it
AI can be very good at questioning data, but it inherits its problems. If "customer", "margin" or "sale" mean different things depending on the department, the agent will give contradictory answers with complete confidence. Adding AI to messy data does not fix the mess: it amplifies it.
What it takes to work
- Well-structured data: reliable, integrated and up-to-date sources.
- Business context and governance: shared definitions, clear metrics and security rules.
- A BI semantic model: measurable, understandable information, with the same definitions for everyone.
- Automation and integrations: flows that connect data, systems and people.
- AI and agents: the final layer, which talks to the data and acts at the right moment.
Where to start
From the bottom. First the data is put in order and the definitions agreed; then the reports and automations are built, and on that base the agents are added. That way each layer works and the AI can rely on it.
How we solve it at GY3 Solutions
We help you at every layer: organising and modelling the data, building the reports, automating and, when it makes sense, incorporating agents. See our Data & AI and Automation and Software lines.
