Microsoft Fabric explained for an SME: what it is and when it makes sense

The problem it tries to solve

In many companies, data travels through a chain of different tools: one to integrate it, another to store it, another to transform it and another to visualise it. Each has its own cost, its own copies of the data and its own permissions management. The more the company grows, the harder it is to keep all of this in order.

Microsoft Fabric proposes the opposite: bringing the whole data lifecycle together in a single platform, so there are fewer silos, less complexity and more collaboration.

What it includes

  • Data Factory: integrates and orchestrates data from multiple sources.
  • Data Engineering: prepares and transforms data at scale.
  • Lakehouse and OneLake: a common, open store where the whole organisation's data lives.
  • Data Warehouse: structured data ready for high-performance analysis.
  • Real-Time Intelligence: real-time data analysis.
  • Power BI: visualisation and analysis, integrated in the same platform.
It also brings data governance (access control, lineage, classification and auditing) and AI capabilities, such as Copilot, to help understand the data.

What it can mean for your business

  • A more complete view of the information, without so many duplicated copies.
  • Decisions based on more reliable data.
  • Less time and cost maintaining tools connected to each other.
  • A foundation ready to grow and to incorporate AI.

Does your company need it?

Not always. For a company with few data sources and simple needs, a good Power BI model may be more than enough. Fabric starts to make sense when there are many sources, growing volumes, several teams working on the same data or a need to govern it better. Technology is not the goal; the goal is your business.
